STUDENTS: Yesterday we had our AVID/TOPS Senior Celebration, our second district wide and fifth overall. By mid June we will have had 227 students graduated from the AVID/TOPS program. 2010: 10 (East) 2011: 21 (East) 2012: 18 (East) 2013: 84 (East, West, Memorial, LaFollette) 2014: 94 (East, West, Memorial, LaFollette) Of the 133 graduates, over 100 are enrolled in colleges and universities across the city, state, and country, involved in student government, academic honors societies, merit based scholarship programs, Division 1, 2 and 3 athletics, fraternities and sororities, pre professional programs, TRIO, McNair, service organizations, campus advisory committees, and cultural advocacy groups. In other words, YALL ARE DOING IT BIG! You all may not know each other, but take every opportunity to connect. In ten years, you will be of great use to one another. That person across the table from you at the senior celebration, at lunch with you during one of my college visits, or sitting with you on a student panel at your old high school may be a resource to you in the future. Many of the people that I work with, go to with personal and professional advice, attend weddings, and invite to my home are people that I formed deep bonds with in college. You all will be spread throughout the country at universities, hospitals, corporations, non profit agencies; the networks that you form now will be something powerful, not only for your families, but for the City of Madison and the country as a whole. Dont take another for granted. Use one another and us as resources. Dont burn bridges; even if you dont like someone, you can still be of service to one another. You are a part of something bigger than yourself. All eyes are on YOU.
