SUCCESS OF THE CENTURY? Because September 11 was one of the chilliest days (10.5ºC) at Expo since early May, only a small number of people were at Place des Nations for the United Arab Republic Day ceremonies. The audience is treated to eloquent speeches by the UAR ambassador to Canada representing President Nasser. The dignitaries were then greeted at the Pavilion of the UAR (photo) in Notre-Dame island. Later in the day, The ambassador visited the other three Arab countries pavilions participating in Expo: Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. The Expo kept on collecting trophies. On that day, the first was awarded to the Commissioner-general by the Canadian Association of tourism for the success of the century. By the same occasion, the Association awarded a trophy to the Commodore of Expo Marina, by the Allied Boating Association of Canada, highlighting the success of that marina which filled all the expectations. Professor Epharaim Katchalski, director of Biophysics at the Weizman Institute of Science and President of the Association for the Advancement of Science in Israel gave a Noranda-sponsored lecture, in the Du Pont Auditorium, on the effect of proteins and nucleic acids on life expectancy. Expo welcomed its 40 millionth visitor, Mr Serge Amiot, from Montreal. Another interesting visitor was eight-year-old Carole Marchand, a blind girl. At the CP-Cominco Pavilion, she was able to try a new guidebook to the exhibits…in Braille. More than 200 blind persons have visited this pavilion; the special five-senses theme was a rare treat for the sightless. Everyone wondered more and more what would happen to the Expo site. There wasnt any shortage of comments and suggestions by journalists. On the occasion of a meeting by the Association of conservative ladies at the Pavilion of Hospitality and Natural Gas, Mrs Robert Stanfield, wife of the Progressive Conservative Party new leader, visited Expo and discussed with the press. French Canadian chanteuse Monique Leyrac, opened a six-day engagement at Expo Theatre, enthusiastically received by a sell-out audience.
