SUCCESS!!! The Lee County School Board Votes to stop all State Mandated High Stakes Testing Immediately! The Crowd Goes Wild! Lee County parents rally around Opting Out of Testing LEE COUNTY. Fla- Some Lee County parents, have had enough of high stakes testing. A group rallied in red outside Wednesday nights school board meeting, there to support the boards decision to look into opting out. They will affect whether a child will be retained in the 3rd grade, affect whether a student is able to graduate with standard diploma, affect teacher salary and whether educator keeps their job, said Lori Fayhee, organizer of Teaching not Testing, and Opt Out Lee County. Parents think testing shouldnt be left up to the state, or district, but rather teachers. For years, teachers were capable of doing that. we are not hiring people off the street to educate our children, said Fayhee. And theyre not alone, gathering more than 900 signatures on an online petition to stop the tests. WINK News talked with a spokesman from the State Department of Education. He defended teaching, for students, and teachers. I cant think of a more valuable tool for parents or teachers to have than to know how much their student is learning from year to year, said Joe Follick. Follick said if the district opted out, they could lose funding, or the state legislature could get involved. The districts attorney also did his own research, finding: Lee County schools could lose state funding. Students will not be able to receive a standard high-school diploma, without taking the ACT or SAT. The school district would also not be eligible for opportunity scholarships among other things.
