SUMMER MOVIES 2013 – THE BLING RING I haven’t seen one of Sofia Coppola’s films in a theater since LOST IN TRANSLATION, which is still the only good film she’s made. I decided to give THE BLING RING a chance because since it’s based on a true story, I thought she might be able to tell a story with this subject matter which could have made for a fascinating movie about this generation of teens. She succeeds to a certain extent. But her style just sucks the life out of her films. It’s really only the performers you are drawn to because the storytelling is really dull. The running time is pretty short, but this played like it was way over two hours and badly needed more editing. Emma Watson alone was worth the price of admission. She’s such a talented performer that despite what Coppola’s doing, you can’t take your eyes off of her when she’s on screen. In a more talented filmmaker’s hands this could have been a fascinating film with a lot to say instead of one that barely scratches the surface.
