SUMMER READING SERIES: We tackled the concept of MYTH - the mythical forms, identifies, manifestations in literature. These kids caught on the understanding that some stories are not literal but mythical - representative of something: a type. The Mythical Witch - representative of evil. The Mythical Young Girl - representative of innocence. The Mythical Warrior/Soldier - representative of courage. The Mythical Elder - representative of wisdom. Our stories in literature are filled with myth - and I am amazed at the ability of the eleven and nine year old to understand the Mythical Figures in these stories which we have been reading. VOCABULARY: FILCH - steal, pilfer, purloin, thieve, lift, pinch (illustrated the difference between Filch and Rob - filch carries treachery, secrecy - while rob denotes force) TREACHERY - betrayal, perfidy, disloyalty PRECIPICE - abyss, cliff, chasm, gulf, cliff, ravine CRONE - hag, harridan, beldan (can also be a witch) Such colorful words for today.
