SUNDAY NEWSDAY JUNE 22, 2 K 14 NACTA Poll: Prakash preferred as COP leader Sunday, June 22 2014 The findings of an opinion poll on the contest for leadership post of the Congress of the People (COP) show most people prefer incumbent Prakash Ramadhar over challengers Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan, Rufus Foster and Dr Lincoln Douglas as leader of the party. However, people seem to show very little interest in that leadership contest and there appears to be very little support for the COP among the population as the poll finds the party struggling to gain traction among voters. The findings of the poll are obtained from interviews conducted over the last two weeks with 240 respondents (43 percent Indians, 39 percent Africans, 17 percent Mixed, and 1 percent others) who are supporters of varied parties. Asked who they prefer as leader of the COP, the overwhelming favourite among all voters is Prakash Ramadhar (47 percent) followed by Seepersad Bachan (19 percent ), Dr Douglas (5 percent) and Foster (2 percent) in that order. Very few PNM supporters express an interest or preference in the COP leadership contest but most of them feel Ramadhar will win re-election as leader. Among supporters of the People’s Partnership government, 54 percent prefer Ramadhar for leadership with 21 percent for Seepersad-Bachan, three percent for Douglas and one percent for Foster. Supporters of the PP feel Ramadhar has the best credentials to bring people together. A majority of supporters of all the parties feel Ramadhar will win the leadership contest. spacer
