SUNDAY STORY TIME: Dear Learners, Most of us must have heard about this concept many times earlier, I have tried to link it to our day-to-day lives in office. The Story: There were two warring tribes; one tribe lived in the valley and the other high in the mountains. The mountain people attacked the valley people one day and kidnapped a baby of one of the valley families and took the infant with them up into the mountains. The valley people didnt know how to climb the mountain. They didnt know where to find the mountain people or how to track them in the steep terrain. They sent out their best team of fighting men to climb the mountain and bring the baby home. The men tried first one method of climbing and then another. After several days of effort and several plans however, they had climbed only several hundred feet only. Feeling hopeless and helpless, the valley men decided that their case was lost and prepared to return to their village below. As they were packing their gear for the descent, they saw the babys mother walking towards them. They realized that she was coming down the mountain that they hadnt figured out how to climb. And then they saw that she had the baby strapped to her back. How could that be? One man greeted her and said, We couldnt climb this mountain. How did you do this when we, the strongest and most able men in the village, couldnt do it? She shrugged her shoulders and said, It wasnt your baby. Moral a. Emotional attachment makes the employee to kick start the change b. A confident starter creates confidence in others. c. Success comes through deep and sustained commitment d. Identify employees who can stand up to be counted rather than hide behind the group. Make them lead the process. e. Make the employees believe that they can succeed, and their efforts will take them to the goal _____________________________________________________ The moment we start liking the rented house we live in, rather than complaining about things like – this wall should have been of different color, this plug point should have been there instead of here; we prefer paying for the paint or the electrician and get it done. Isn’t it? The same thing happens in organizations as well. An employee who says – ‘Yahan ka system hi kharab hai’ and an employee who says ‘Yeh bahut sahi jagah hai boss’, share two different worlds under the same roof. An employee, who feels that he is working for his own organization to help it grow not just to get his salary credited at the end of the month, is actually a real asset. He will try to find out a solution every time rather than counting the problems. This reminds me of Shiv Khera who once said “If you don’t have a solution, you are the problem.” However, If we can develop the sense of ownership within ourselves and in our team/employees we may witness miracles happen; like, Higher efficiency and effectiveness, Low attrition, Low recruitment cost, Low recruitment process’s hidden costs such as time, patience and resource, and moreover a highly engaged team of performers. Dad always says, A mother is a best manager. He is right. There should be a Mother-like leadership style in modern day organizations in this fast moving competitive era. Happy Sunday!
