SUPERCOOL ON A HOT SUMMER DAY. Ampeg Scroll Bass. 1966 BACK TO MY AMPEG COLLECTION. I’m trying to decide whether to sell this one. It is my idea of the ultimate cool electric bass. This series was first shown by AMPEG at NAMM Summer Show in1966 as their first “horizontal” bass-that means you hold it instead of it leaning on it. It was quickly identified as the “Scroll Bass” because of-its scroll headstock taken from the traditional stand up acoustic bass. Some interesting features: 1. The body is hollow with “F” holes that go all the way through the body. Before introducing the “clear zipper” guitar/bass Ampeg already had a “peak through” with this model. Body is three pieces of maple. 2. The front is one giant pickguard. 3. Has what Ampeg called the “mystery” pickup which is located under the bridge-you have the bridge, a thin steel diaphragm, then 2 large magnetic coils covered in epoxy which allowed a player to use “gut” strings. 4. The strings on this bass are longer than I-95. This was supposed to mimic plucking a standup bass. 5. The tailpiece was actually based on two steel pins that slid into sleeves in the body of the bass. 6. Maple neck. 7. This one has a beautiful FRETLESS ROSEWOOD fretboard. Mine is SN: 030. Very early and it shows its ages.
