SUPERSTORM SANDY LESSONS LEARNED Two years ago Superstorm Sandy struck and devastated our area. Fortunately, due to a flood protection system that was put in by the US Army Corp of Engineers in 1970, Hazlet Township was spared from the extensive storm damage that struck our neighboring towns. We were able to provide needed assistance to those towns after the storm. We also leaned we need to be better prepared for future storms. In order to better equip the township to deal with the next storm, our department has participated in the Federal Governments 1033 program, which allows us to obtain surplus military equipment for law enforcement use. As of today, we have obtained over $700,000.00 of surplus military equipment. Most of this equipment is brand new or slightly used. We have obtained 11 generators which will allow us to operate traffic lights on the highways and Middle Road in the event of long term power failures. We have obtained vehicles which will allow us to go through high water for rescue operations. We also have 35 multi channel portable radios that will aid us in emergency communications. This program has been coordinated by Lt. Ted Wittke who has done an outstanding job in obtaining this equipment. The best part about this equipment is that it is free and at no cost to our residents. Attached are pictures of some of the equipment.
