SURVIVAL SIGNAL OF THE WEEK: Charm & Niceness - Charm is an ability, not an inherent feature of ones personality because its almost always directed toward a goal. It has motive. To charm is to compel, to control by allure or attraction. Think of charm as a verb, not a trait. He was so nice is a comment often heard from people describing the person who, moments or months after the niceness, victimizes them. We must learn that niceness does not equal goodness. Niceness is a decision, a strategy of social interaction. People seeking to control others almost always present the image of a nice person in the beginning. -Gavin De Becker
