SWRJFC Under 9s match report. Honours even In Champions League Sunday 29th September 2013 Game 1 – Champions League Game We took to the road for our Champions League fixture at Wortley Juniors. Following 3 good performances we hoped to continue in that rich vein of form but unfortunately we were not at our best today on a small pitch that wasn’t conducive to free flowing football. We deservedly took the lead when Oli Stables fed the ball in midfield to Josh Falk who ran with the ball before hitting an unstoppable shot from 20 yards which gave the keeper no chance. Minutes later we scored our second goal when Josh Falk delivered a good ball upfront to Charlie Keedy who turned and fed Louis Taylor who skipped past a defender and coolly side footed his left foot shot into the net. Despite creating other chances the score line remained 2 – 0 to Sherburn at half time. The second half saw the Sherburn players making several mistakes and 1 led to the first Wortley goal. Shortly afterwards the referee gave a dubious penalty which was saved superbly by Jack Timlin in the Sherburn goal. Unfortunately the Wortley striker reacted far quicker to the rebound than the Sherburn players and the score was levelled up at 2 – 2. Wortley took a 3 – 2 lead after more poor defending and Jack Timlin made a couple of good saves. We still created some good chances of our own and the best was a speedy run down the wing from Josh Falk before crossing into the box for Charlie Keedy who just side footed wide. We finally got back on level terms which was richly deserved when Josh Falk crossed into the box and the Wortley defender turned into his own goal. Whilst our standards were lower than previous games credit must go to the players for not letting their heads go down and fighting back for a draw. Jack Timlin played well in goal, Josh Falk scored and created 2 goals but Man of the Match was awarded to Sam Barnett for some excellent tackling in defence and good distribution. No fixture next week so next game is Wrenthorpe Rangers in week 3 of the Champions League on 13th October. Game 2. Friendly Wortley took the lead when after a good save by Jack Timlin the Wortley striker followed up quickly to side foot in to the net. Minutes later Jasper Cusworth wriggled past a few players and concluded the great run by shooting over the bar. Sherburn equalised when George Hoskins made a great tackle in defence and passed to Jasper Cusworth who played a great ball to Bradley Thistlewood who coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper and levelled matters at Half Time. Sherburn were in control in the second half and took a deserved lead when Jasper Cusworth scored a great headed goal from a lovely corner from Oliver Summersgill. Another good corner from Oliver Summersgill found Bradley Thistlewood who made it 3 – 1. Sherburn went 4 – 1 up after another corner from Oliver Summersgill was converted very well by Alex Oliver. Shortly afterwards Wortley reduced the arrears to 4 – 2 which was the final result. Solid performances at the back from Stan Wilks & George Hoskins , good performances in midfield from Jasper Cusworth and Alex Oliver and 2 goals again for Bradley Thistlewood upfront. Man of the match went to Oliver Summersgill for an excellent 2nd half at right midfield including 3 assists.
