SYRIZA held a five day national conference in mid-July, the outcome of which was far from entirely positive for the workers movement. The SYRIZA leadership around Alexis Tsipras went on the offensive against the left of the party. Almost 75 per cent of the time at the conference was taken up with the debate over Tsipras’s move to compel the left currents in the party to dissolve. This highly undemocratic measure was strongly resisted by the Left Platform formed by some of the founding components of SYRIZA – the left current of Synaspismos, various revolutionary socialist groups including the International Workers Left (DEA) and a number of prominent individual leftists. In the lead up to the conference the mainstream press in Greece went on the offensive against the left wing of SYRIZA, in particular targeting the DEA. The press barons demanded that Tsipras prove he was fit to govern Greek capitalism by putting his house in order i.e. cracking down on the revolutionary wing of SYRIZA. More conservative Greek nationalists in SYRIZA viciously attacked the DEA because of its principled stand in support of the rights of Macedonians.
