Sable Island: June 22 We awoke to an awe-inspiring sunrise on one horizon, and the long, low profile of Sable Island on the other. For many passengers this was a moment dreamt of for decades – and now the Sea Adventurer was dropping anchor just off North Beach! Before long, thanks to fair conditions, we were making our first Zodiac excursion to the island, our stalwart team of catchers grabbing the boats to turn them against the swell as we landed. Four Parks Canada staffers and the wonderful Zoe Lukas – who for many was almost a mythic figure, thanks to her dedication to the conservation of the Island and its iconic horses – shared their knowledge of the islands ecology and history, both on and off ship. Curious seals checked us out, but it was the horses that drew the most attention on a morning walk, up over Bald Dune for a view of the length of the island and a glimpse of its remarkable wild ecosystems. After reluctantly making our way back to the ship for lunch, we set out again, this time for a Zodiac cruise along about a third of the 26 mile islands length. While viewing several horse herds and numerous colonies of curious Gray seals from the vantage point of Zodiacs on calm seas, we enjoyed one of the trips great surprisess a mola mola was sighted in the water! Back at the ship in time for a late supper, the crowd was abuzz: all faces shining. We wrapped up the day with delicious desserts while viewing Mike Beedells amazing whale photos. As we head for bed after our first day on mythical Sable Island, the lingering question is: how will tomorrow match today? And we sleep easy, knowing well soon find out.
