Sad... I saw a new display at the civil rights institute in Birmingham of one of the little girls, Denise McNair who was killed at the 16th st baptist church in 1963. The display consisted of a baby picture, a poodle skirt, a dress, pictures of her with her mom and dad, & a letter from Spike Lee. The display also included items from the day she was murdered (eg., a pocket book, shoes she was wearing, and a charm bracelet). Also displayed is the piece of brick that was embedded in Denises skull. On our way to the institute we watched a movie, four little girls, by spike lee. I encourage everyone to see that. Last year The girls were awarded a congressional gold coin that I saw displayed. I saw so much more this year than last year. The institute is a fantastic tribute to the civil rights movement. I highly recommend that everyone take a trip to the institute, 4th st district, & Kelly Ingram park where the childrens movement mobilized. There are a lot of fantastic monuments & statues there. In the park you will see depictions of Bull Connors water hoses & dogs that he set upon the children. Theres also a structure that represents the children he put in jail & much, much more. Sad, sad, sad!
