Sad about the passing of Buddy DeFranco. It at least gives me the opportunity to post one of my favorite tracks in the history of recorded sound, Flying Home, by the Lionel Hampton Quintet with Hamp, Buddy, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Buddy Rich. When I was in high school, I saw a single-disc compilation of Hamptons 1950s recordings with Peterson and grabbed it. I think this 17-minute Flying Home was track 3 and it was one of those I-remember-every-second-like-it-was-yesterday moments. On and on it went, one more chorus, one more chorus, Hampton grunting, the other musicians yelling, piling on the climaxes, going past the point of no return. It had a tremendous impact on me as I was just starting to play music with my high school buddies and we wanted to generate this kind of excitement, too! I remember playing it for friends in college who didnt even really like jazz and even they couldnt help getting swept away in those final minutes. It was my first encounter with Buddy and I sure had no complaints! Fortunately, it wouldnt be the last. So all the members of Hamptons quintet on that 1954 date are gone now but the music is not going anywhere. Seriously, if you have 17 free minutes, listen to this today, tomorrow and any chance you can get. RIP Buddy, Hamp, O.P., Ray and the other Buddy. And thank you. https://youtube/watch?v=XnATPRcLMEU
