Sad to hear that one of the cleverest and kindest people I had the privilege of knowing back when I was an undergraduate, the Irish theologian (later priest) Lynda Patterson, has died. In the years since I knew her, Lynda had emigrated to New Zealand, been ordained into the Anglican priesthood, and become the Dean of Christchurch Cathedral. That cathedral was damaged so severely in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake (Lynda was inside the building with several others at the time, but thankfully they escaped unharmed) that what remains of it is due to be demolished. In the cathedrals stead, Lynda and her colleagues established a transitional Cardboard Cathedral where the people of Christchurch continue to worship. Its obvious, from the tributes to Lynda that are being paid in the New Zealand media and online, that she continued to elicit great admiration and affection from those she knew, worked with and ministered to. Her predecessor as Dean, Peter Beck, describes her in the article linked to below as probably the finest preacher Ive ever heard. RIP.
