Sadly, because of the way our working gears have been tuned - TopicsExpress

Sadly, because of the way our working gears have been tuned over the years, we perceive the workplace to be a place of scarcity. The best and the biggest room in the office has to be fought for as well as the budget allocation for more resources, the PR Department must conscientiously and regularly carry our department’s achievement in the newsletter for us to be considered successful, the cross functional meetings that start with pleasant banter on golf scores soon become a battle zone with every functional head trying to defend his domain from extra responsibility. We hang onto our notions of security and abundance hoping to secure a little island of paradise for ourselves in the big bad corporate world. All the fancy talk of cooperation, collaboration and mutual trust sounds good in principle, but for many of us the reality is to live the dictum; survival of the fittest. Little do we realise that we ourselves are the source of abundance at work. I once had the pleasure of knowing a brilliant young executive who left an incredibly cushy bank job in Switzerland to join the local chain of banks I was working for. In spite of his jaw-dropping qualification, experience and position, he did not mind sharing his shack of a room with two other executives while the bank arranged for renovations. He was one of the most popular mentors for the junior management associates and he was also extremely accessible in spite of his crammed work plan. He answered all phone calls by saying out the company’s name and his photos rarely made it to the company’s newsletter despite his popularity. He brought great strides to this local bank and served it all the while with energy. Last I knew, he is now somewhere in the Gulf continuing to make greater strides with another company. The moral of the story: You create your environment’s abundance from your attitude. The great mahogany desk, the valuable paintings in your office, the financial budget allocated to you, that Mont Blanc in your pocket or the Lexus you drive is not abundance. Abundance is the fullness of your heart as you develop the new entrants in your company with the intent of adding value to them. This abundance is nurtured with your own humility and patience because you realise that you have not and perhaps never will reach the peak of perfection in your quest for excellence and success. Your bountiful worldview is reflected by your generosity to others because you are grateful for all that has come to you from others. The loss of material things that you mistake for abundance cannot really impoverish you. The abundance inside of you goes with you wherever you are.
