Saida Kadal – Ashai Bagh stretch under threat What Is Admin Doing? SmallerDefaultLarger This is with regard to the Saida Kadal – Ashai Bagh road stretch. Since I am a daily commuter on this road and as such am witness to vandalization and defacement being carried out daily in this stretch of about 800 mtrs. It seems as such that the authorities like LAWDA, SMC and Pollution Control Board have turned a blind eye towards this important stretch. While a new shop is coming up every day, off late a good number of automobile workshops and service stations are taking the toll of the famous Dal Lake as the waste is thrown straight into the lake. Two big cement tile manufacturing units are operational in the area and I am surprised how the Pollution Control Board and LAWDA people have permitted the units to be opened in the Dal Lake itself. The cement waste is killing the internationally famed waterbody on which thousand of crores of rupees are spent annually for its restoration. Besides these units, service stations and countless automobile workshops can prove detrimental to this lake, which is dying a slow death due to negligence and official apathy. Off late a number of carpentry and joinery mills have also come up in this infamous stretch. Besides, makeshift vegetable vendors have started putting up kiosks on both sides of the road leaving almost no space for the traffic to move. This being an important road link to Hazratbal shrine, NIT and Kashmir University, there is every likelihood of accidents as the commuters park their vehicles near these makeshift vegetable kiosks for shopping, resulting in massive traffic jams. I through the medium of this newspaper, appeal to the authorities to rise above the vote bank politics and deter these unscrupulous elements and save Dal Lake, lest we will have to repent in the times to come. I also appeal to the likeminded to report these kind of official apathy through We the Srinagarites column, which gives Srinagarites a platform to be Citizen Journalists. Let’s not stop trying. May be somebody the administration will wake up and rise to the occasion for the betterment of the society in general and for the Mother Kashmir in particular.
