Sakrete High PSI Concrete Mix (with a twist) This is from the Building Code Forum Newsletter Sakrete I normally reserve this spot for a new or innovative product but not this month. In honor of the deck building season, pole barns and other projects that require a specific PSI concrete, Id like to talk about this over-used product. Of of the most abused and over-used products on the market is Sakrete. I think it is a wonderful product when it is used properly. Just understand its limitations. In our office is a letter from Sakrete stating that unless the product is wet-mixed, there is NO guarantee of PSI strength. Did everyone get that? So when the contractor states they are going to throw a few bags in the hole wet or even put a little water on it, tell them no. Now, I dont care about fence posts and things like that. Im talking about structural components like piers and footings. This is almost as bad as watching someone place a 4x4 or 6x6 on the dirt or some gravel at the bottom of a hole and put concrete around it. For commercial jobs the IBC is pretty clear about this: 1903.1 General. Materials used to produce concrete, concrete itself and testing thereof shall comply with the applicable standards listed in ACI 318. Where required, special inspections and tests shall be in accordance with Chapter 17. 1905.8 Mixing. Mixing of concrete shall be performed in accordance with ACI 318, Section 5.8. Just a little food for thought on this commonly used product.
