Salaam everyone, some of you may know I was a part of UConns UNICEF and Amnesty International groups when I was at Storrs. Apparently Im still on their email list soo I got this from them and wanted to share so everyone could help out PLEASE: Hello Everyone, As Adam and I (Amnestys event coordinators for those of you we havent seen before) announced at last nights meeting, we are launching a semester long campaign to bring awareness to UConn about the dire situation in Syria. Even if you do not regularly attend meetings or even if you havent had time to come, please consider lending a hand in your free time. It is am immense project for this club, but one that will be rewarding and fun. If you are interested in helping, please note that this will not be a strenuous time commitment. Ideally any tasks you undertake will only use about half an hour of your time a week, plus our weekly meeting. We have broken down the process into a few steps, so please take a look and see if there is anything in particular that strikes your fancy. 1. Tabling in the Student Union, February 10th and 11th. Our table will include a poster with key facts the understanding the situation in Syria (no the rebels arent all affiliated with al Qaeda or the Muslim Brotherhood) and how it is a global human rights disaster and quite frankly, a genocide. We will be working on the poster next Thursday during the meeting, so if you have creative talents we need you! If you plan on tabling, plan to join the meeting on Thursday for a brief information session on what you need to know to be an informed and effective advocate. 2. Letter Writing Campaign As part of our tabling campaign we will be asking people who stop and listen to sign a letter that we will mail to the UN. We will be drafting said letter on Thursday, but if you cant make it, well invite you to the Google Doc so you can chip in. 3. Fundraiser with UConn UNICEF to raise money for the Za-atari Refugee Camp. We still need ideas on creative fundraising methods- anything but bake sales!! 4. ROCK FOR RIGHTS! Concert on Mar. 29 This will be the culmination of our efforts and it is going to be awesome. We are in progress of asking performing groups to come and compete in a massive fundraising effort. We are trying to get A Cappella groups, Improv groups, dance teams, etc to come and perform. It will be a contest for who wins and there will be raffles to win a serenade by your favorite group. All proceeds will go to Save the Children, a group that has been extremely active in Syria. I hope you all consider getting involved and if any one wants this to act as community service hours I am happy to sign off on anybodys forms who participates. If you are interested please email either Adam or I at uconn4syria@gmail, and we will send you a calendar of goals and more information. For more information on the Syria Crisis, please go to uconn4syria.wordpress within the next few days. I will be posting information there for people to get acquainted with. If you questions or comments feel free to express them! Thank you and have a marvelous weekend!
