Answer: Wa Alaykum salam Brother, Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and Chief of the Messengers, and upon all his family and companions. Allahs sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein … Al-Quran Chapter 9/ Verse: 36 In this same Month we fast the 9th and 10th day called Tasua and Ashura, The Prophet used to fast 10th day and he promised if next year finds me i will also first the 9th of Muharram, its reported that he died in that same year before the new year! Abu Hurairah narrated that: Allahs Messenger (S.A.W) said: The most virtuous fasting after the month of Ramadan is that of Allahs month of Al-Muharram. And the most virtuous Salat after the obligatory is the night prayer. (Sahih) Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) was asked about observing As-Saum (the fast) on the tenth day of Muharram, and he replied, It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year. Narrated Abu Musa: When the Prophet (S.A.W) arrived at Medina, he noticed that some people among the Jews used to respect Ashura (i.e. 10th of Muharram) and fast on it. The Prophet (S.A.W) then said, We have more right to observe fast on this day. and ordered that fasting should be observed on it. So , Brothers and Sisters we can fast the whole month of Muharram or fast the mentioned days 9thh and 10th of Muharram, Theres also another Hadith that reports that whoever fasts one day in muharram he or she is rewarded the rewards of fasting 30 days! Ibn Abbaas (RA) narrated that the Prophet (S.A.W) said: Whoever fasts one day during the month of Muharram will get a reward of fasting 30 days. There are 4 ways of fasting it: 1) This one is more perfect: fasting the tenth of Muharram, the day before it and the day after it. 2) Fasting the tenth of Muharram and the day before it (or the day after it). 3) Fasting the tenth of Muharram only. 4) One can fast full month of Muharram if at all you find no difficulties.
