Salim Ali--(was an Indian ornithologist and naturalist) Sálim Moizuddin Abdul Ali-- (12 November 1896 – 20 June 1987). --- Referred to as the birdman of India. ---Salim Ali was among the first Indians to conduct systematic bird surveys across India and his bird books helped develop ornithology. Birth-- 12 November 1896 Mumbai, British India. Early life-- Salim Alis early education was at St. Xaviers College, Mumbai. ---Following a difficult first year in college, he dropped out and went to Tavoy, Burma (Tenasserim) to look after the familys Wolfram (Tungsten) mining (tungsten was used in armour plating and was valuable during the war) ---After attending morning classes at Davars College, he began to attend zoology classes at St. Xaviers College and was able to complete the course in zoology Ornithology... --On his return to India in 1930, he discovered that the guide lecturer position had been eliminated due to lack of funds. ---He was accompanied and supported on his early ornithological surveys by his wife. -->Salim Ali was very influential in ensuring the survival of the BNHS and managed to save the then 100-year old institution by writing to the then Prime Minister Pandit Nehru for financial help. Honours... ---Joy Gobinda Law Gold Medal in 1953, awarded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal. ---He received honorary doctorates from the Aligarh Muslim University (1958), Delhi University (1973) and Andhra University (1978). ----The Indian government decorated him with a Padma Bhushan in 1958 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1976. He was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1985. Death-- 20 June 1987 (aged 90) Mumbai, India.
