Sally has been watching a family of Bluebirds in our backyard. Mom and Dad set up housekeeping in one of our birdhouses a while ago, and recently Sally has seen them bringing in food. In the past week or so Mom and Dad have been coaxing their babies out of the nest, and letting them learn to fly. This morning Sally saw a commotion at the entrance to the nest, it looked like a bird was stuck. One of the young ones (Theyre not babies anymore) had his foot entangled in the debris that the nest was made out of, mostly bits of hair and string. Sally held the little guy while I freed his foot, which was pretty mangled and deformed; it must have been tangled when he was little, and deformed as he grew until it finally got tangled up in the rest of the nest. We were able to completely free his foot, and although it is unusable he took off flying like a bullet with Mom and Dad close behind. I took this video when Sally first went over to assess the situation. Mom and Dad had been close by watching their stuck offspring, and in the video you can see Mom and Dad swooping and diving right over Sallys head. All in all a happy ending; Im sure a bluebird can get along fine with one foot, and now he knows to avoid getting it tangled.
