Salt consumption influences the risk of cardiac insufficiency APA Sep 5, 2013 33 views 5 stars Salt is important for the body but too much is harmful. Scientists have now ascertained in a study that a higher consumption of salt increases cardiac insufficiency. The study was presented at the Congress of the European Society for Cardiology (ESC Congress 2013) in Amsterdam. The researchers at the University Clinic Cologne referred to data from almost 20,000 people (aged between 39 and 79), who had taken part in the EPIC study in Norfolk (Great Britain). The salt intake was measured by the amount of the sodium excretion in their urine. According to the analysis, the 20 percent who consumed the most salt developed cardiac insufficiency by one third more often than the 20 percent who consumed the least amount of salt. Even validating other risk factors did not make any difference to the result. "Further detailed analysis showed that the lower salt intake decreases the risk of cardiac insufficiency presumably on the basis of the antihypertensive effect", said study author, Roman Pfister. A reduction in salt consumption could therefore reduce the risk of a later cardiac insufficiency. The optimal target value of sodium intake will, however, have to be ascertained in further studies.
