Saltwater Reports Here is our 19JUL13 update on the saltwater scene. Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association News by Dr. Ken Neill III(PSWSFA) One of the more interesting catches this past week comes from the York River. Brandon Bartlett was fishing for bait when he got a bigger bite on his two-hook bottom rig. He had two big pompano on. Pompano are one of the more rare entries in Virginia’s saltwater citation program. Both of these fish qualified for citations giving Brandon both first and second place in the state so far this year. Small to medium-sized croaker and spot seem to be everywhere along with good numbers of sea mullet. Flounder fishing remains slow but it has improved. The largest fish are being caught at the CBBT. The Gloucester Boys and Girls Club’s flounder tournament was held this past weekend. Like with the Flounder Bowl earlier, a PSWSFA member won this event. Cliff Rowe weighed in a 19.31 pound stringer for first place and also won the big-fish Calcutta with his 8.21 pound doormat. Cliff’s team was live-baiting at the CBBT. Big sheepshead are being caught at the CBBT. Small spadefish and some big black drum are also being encountered at this structure. Good catches of Spanish mackerel are being made along the oceanfront with some Spanish being caught in the lower bay. Small bluefish are also attacking the spoons trolled for the mackerel. Cobia remain the main game in town. Chumming on the various humps in the lower bay continues to produce fish. When the conditions are right (sunny), sight fishing for them is very good. Most of the fish are smaller “keepers” with some larger cobia encounters keeping things interesting. A very exciting sight fishery right now are large schools of big red drum that are roaming around near the mouth of the bay. The coastal wrecks are holding nice sea bass, triggerfish, and some larger spadefish. There have been some amberjack on wrecks like the Gulf Hustler and Hanks but for more consistent action, head to the south towers. Offshore fishing is a good mixed-bag fishery with yellowfin tuna, dolphin, wahoo, and billfish all being caught. Good numbers of bigeye tuna continue to crash anglers spreads. When weather allows, it has been a good offshore season so far. York River Charters - (757)645-8397: No report Buckroe Pier (727-1486): The daytime pier manager reports anglers fishing during the day, using bloodworms, are catching medium to large sized spot; medium sized mullet are hitting squid or shrimp;, a few keeper flounder, measuring up to 17-inches are being caught using live spot; some large cobia have been spotted swimming under big rays, around the pier. At night, a few speckled trout have been taken, along with Taylor bluefish and small croakers. Some very large sharks have been spotted mingling with the rays around the pier. Kayak Fishing (Forrest Short)(218-4800): The hot weather has not slowed down the puppy drum bite. Lots of nice fish were caught this week inside most major creeks and rivers. Most fish are between 17"-20", but the larger ones up to 26" are being caught on topwater baits. Speckled trout action has slowed somewhat, but still some nice fish being reported. Again, topwater has been the ticket for the larger ones. Large croaker are being caught around the mouth of the York River, especially in the deeper holes. Flounder, spot and bluefish round out the other fish being caught. The hot weather has sent bass fishing into summer time mode. Most fish are being caught in the early morning and late evening hours. Senkos, frogs and spinnerbaits are the top producers. Lots of chain pickerel around, as well. Jet Ski Fishing – Brian Lockwood (342-5780): Jet Ski Brian Lockwood took Tony and Thao Jet Ski Fishing along the buoys of the Baltimore and York shipping lanes. They were using live eels and bucktails looking for cobia. It was a slow day but luck prevailed and Tony got hooked up and landed a nice 40 inch keeper Cobia, a first for him and on a jet ski at that! Saw maybe 6 other cobia that went down before they could get an eel. It was a great day on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay! Notable Catches Wt/Lgth, Angler/Hometown, Where Caught, Weigh Station Summer Flounder 11-1*Elliott Lane, Newport News*CBBT*Bishop’s Fishing
