Sam Terry 26 mins · Christmas Day, 1941 - White Christmas was performed for the first time by Bing Crosby on his weekly NBC radio program, The Kraft Music Hall. Written by Irving Berlin, the song became the top-selling single ever until being surpassed by Elton Johns Candle in the Wind 1997. As a Russian Jew, Berlin did not celebrate Christmas but it was a day that held special meaning to him. His son, Irving Berlin, Jr. died at three weeks old on December 25, 1928. Berlin spent each Christmas Day visiting his sons grave. Berlins biographer wrote The kind of deep secret of [White Christmas] may be that it was Berlin responding in some way to his melancholy about the death of his son.
