Samajwadi Party celebrates UP success, seeks Congress alliance in Maharashtra: By virtue of an eight out of 11 seats victory in the UP by-elections, Diwali came early for the Samajwadi Party (SP). After the results were declared on Tuesday, the state unit of the party swiftly organised a celebration at its Nariman Point headquarters, while announcing their plans to trounce the communal forces in Maharashtra. However, the party insists that to keep communal forces at bay in the state, the Congress-NCP must collaborate with them, so that secular votes are not divided. A visibly happy Abu Azmi, state chief of the party and MLA said, Its a fantastic win for the party and we owe our success to the BSP, whose absence in the by-elections had made it a virtual straight fight between SP and BJP. However, for Maharashtra, an alliance with the Cong-NCP is a must, so that we can consolidate the secular votes and keep the communal saffron alliance at bay. Stating why his party was seeking the alliance, Azmi said, I dont want people to hold me for the division of secular votes. If these votes divide, BJP-Sena will benefit. Azmi had proposed an alliance with the Cong-NCP two months ago, to which both the parties are yet to respond. As per speculation, the bigger parties which are already at loggerheads for seat sharing, have realised that they wont be able to leave more than 2-3 seats for SP, a formula which SP will obviously refuse, as the party had won four seats in the 2009 assembly elections and are seeking to field 50 candidates if an alliance with the Cong-NCP doesnt work-out. SP is a marginal player in the state with a strong influence over Shivajinagar-Mankhurd and Mumbra-Bhiwandi. The Muslim and North Indian community is its core constituency. Though it had won four seats in 2009 assembly, one of its MLAs defected to NCP.
