Samhain is the most important festival in the pagan calendar. Also known as All Hallows Eve or Halloween, it is associated with death, this can be seen all around us in the leafless trees and barren farmlands where the remnants from the annual harvest will rot back into the ground, reminding us of our own fragile mortality. This is the time to honour the souls of those who have passed before us and acknowledge their part in shaping our world, as we hope one day, we will be remembered for doing our bit too! The veil between our world and the otherworld is at its thinnest at Samhain, allowing the souls of our recently departed brothers and sisters to take one last dance among us before being delivered from Earthly limitations. Halloween rituals for children are a wonderful way for them to accept, safely, that we are mortal. By teaching them, especially through play, they can explore and experience for themselves the connections to the spirits and accept their place in the world around them.
