Sammy is a special-needs dog. Hes had a rough time of things and really needs an experienced dog person. This large (80 lbs) German shepherd/heeler/akita mix was pulled from a kill shelter in Alberta. A volunteer there didnt want him euthanized but his time was up at the shelter. Shed befriended the big dog and he looked to her for direction. We agreed to take Sammy for rehabilitation, since he was afraid of new people. His rescuer drove many hours to our sanctuary, to save Sammys life. This 5 year-old is highly intelligent, a quick learner and exceedingly loyal. He needs someone who is comfortable being the lead; who is knowledgable with reward-based training techniques and who will teach rules and boundaries. Although he is fine as a lone dog and good with many big dogs who like to rough house/run and have been properly introduced, he is a natural protector, bred for guarding. He can be overly protective around strangers, whether people or other dogs. He is not recommended to go to a home with kids and definitely not cats. Sammy has a high prey drive around cats and small animals. A good fence is necessary for him, so that he can enjoy the outdoors (he has a nice, thick coat). He doesnt try to get out and also loves to be inside with his people. He is a low energy dog who enjoys being with this people, is calm in the house and not destructive. Hes good company and a true friend and companion, once that bond is established. Sammy is not the right dog to take to dog parks or off leash hikes, or even walks around the neighbourhood. But for someone who wants a house companion and has another dog who also needs company, Sammy could be a good match. Since he doesnt run off, a rural home would be all right, but only if there were no cats or prey animals. This dog is very smart, very affectionate and for the people he knows and cares about, he loves them with all his heart! He can go for walks/runs/jogs but we recommend a basket muzzle. In this case, its best for everyone, including Sammy. His breed mix encourages him to be a guard dog, to his detriment, but nonetheless, hes still a good dog. Sammy needs a very special person.
