Sams Toronado In the Sixties Oldsmobile made a bullet of a car with retractable headlights-- the Toronado. You could picture Sean Connery careening from would-be assassins, rear-facing pop-up machine guns blazing away at the bad guys. My father owned one in gold, no gull-wing doors but bold and sleek-- a killer ride. On the upper East Side one day a sassy blonde and young girl stood, trying to hail a cab in the rain. It was Connie Stevens. Dad, gallant James Bond offered her a lift, throwing open the door Of his Goldfingermobile. A debonair gentleman, silver-haired in tailored threads driving the look of money: even famous Connie had no doubt a knight on golden steed had come to help her out. Some niceties exchanged but Dad not star-struck played it cool. Ms. Stevens and her niece for their part grateful that he had not turned out to be a fawning fan, just a Spy Who Loved Me good samaritan.
