Samuel F. Mosteller: The local SCLC Chapter in Valdosta led by Rev. Floyd Rose has been proactive in so many of the most relevant civil rights cases of our times, the Quitman 10+2 and the Johnson case and other significant cases. The Valdosta Chapter leadership was trained by Dr. King himself. There has been a lot of talk about White membership in the SCLC Chapters in Georgia. The White members that we do have are very active and have to by nature be controversial. Ms. Allison Leigh Touchton Parsons has been interviewed on radio, TV, and several newspapers and magazines on the Johnson case. There is no one who knows more about the Johnson case than Rev. Rose and Allison. They developed the case with the family to make it a national case. The day that the Johnson child was found in the gym Rev. Rose was at the school investigating, the first rally the Johnsons had was at Rev. Rose’s church free of charge(all monies raised was given to the Johnsons) The first march was organized by SCLC. When the Johnsons went to jail Rev. Floyd Rose put up his house to get them out. When Rev. Rose offered a $10,000.00 reward for credible information concerning the Johnson case no information was forthcoming. Allison Leigh Touchton Parsons was involved all thru-out the case without complaint. The GBI conducted an autopsy and their findings were not satisfactory to the family. The SCLC assisted the family in raising funds for a forensic scientist and exhuming the body. When the forensic scientist disagreed with each other the SCLC decided to take it to the department of Justice. That is where the case is now. There is no higher authority than the Department of Justice. The SCLC has done all that a civil rights organization can or should do in a civil right case. The leadership of all civil rights organizations need to be leery of those who rush to judgment not knowing the specifics of a case and change the subject to whether or not we need White people as members within the organization.
