Samuel Wood of Cape Coast, born on 17th January 1886, was the first person to start scouting in the Gold Coast colony. He won a drawing contest which was sponsored by an English newspaper, THE SHEFFIELD WEEKLY. The Paper offered Samuel Wood a school scholarship as his prize. Unfortunately, the scholarship could only be used in England and he was unable to travel to the United Kingdom he received a prize of several books and a subscription to the newspaper, Instead. One of the books was SCOUTING FOR BOYS written by Lord Robert Baden Powell. Upon reading the book, Samuel Wood desired to start a Scout group in Cape Coast and therefore applied for directions from the Imperial Headquarters of the Scout Movement in London. Samuel Wood received charter for the first Gold Coast Scout group in Cape Coast on January 4, 1912. Upon the organizational efforts of Sam Wood, the Imperial Headquarters gave charter for the legislation of Scouting in the whole of Gold Coast in 1914. This charter brought into being the Gold Coast Local Association of the Boy Scout Movement, which one hundredth anniversary celebration we are launching. Gallant Sam Wood passed away peacefully on September 9, 1952. When Ghana became a republic in 1960, the Association subsequently changed its name to Ghana Scout Association to reflect national identity and its strong complementary role to the School and family for the development of young people in Ghana. In 1960 the Ghana Scout Association became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), the largest youth movement in the world with over 30 million member.
