San Antonio Express newspaper, Aug. 4, 1937, Wednesday. PADRE LIFE PANEL REMOVED AT ALAMO Panels depicting the life of the old Franciscan padres at the Alamo have been removed from over the front and back doors of the recently constructed Alamo Museum and replaced with panels showing Travis, Bowie, and Crockett waiting to greet Bonham who is entering up his horse. A change was made after members of the Alamo committee of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas viewed the first panel designed by the architects and executed by Otto Villa, 2003 East Houston Street. Villa said the committee thought the original idea would be all right for a mission, but that the Alamo and the Alamo Museum represented the Republic of Texas and the members wanted something to carry out that idea. Members of the committee, when contacted would say nothing of the change. They expressed their appreciation of the present panel saying that it represented one of the most dramatic moments of Texas history. Against a background of beige, the Alamo and figures are done in white on the two stone panels 24 by 42 inches. Bonham, the last man to enter the Alamo, is shown astride his famous white horse. The removed panels were done in solid white and represented the life of the padres. Some were working while others were praying. Mrs. Letta Small, custodian of the Alamo, said she thought the new panels very appropriate for the museum and very beautiful in design. Mrs. O. M. Farnsworth, member of the Alamo committee and former State president of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, also expressed her enthusiasm of the panels depicting the dramatic moment in Texas history, but refused to comment on the change. She said the second panel had been approved both by the Alamo committee and the State Board of Control. Mrs. J. M. Kincaid, chairman of the Alamo committee, said this panel was selected by the committee and that no change had been made since the selection was made. The first panels, it was stated, were designed by the architects and placed before members of the committee viewed the work. This was about two months ago. Later they were removed and replaced with the new panels.
