Sandra Lewis asks: Eli, where did u learn to start running?? Did u start at a certain weight or did u obtain a coach at the beginning? My answer: We ALL know how to run. I mean we ran around as kids and Im sure if we needed to catch a bus or run away from someone chasing us we would manage to run right? In all seriousness though, running as a sport is a tiny bit different. When I started out to exercise six years ago, I simply started walking. The running came as part of my being bored of just walking. One day, in the middle of one of my daily walks, I just decided I would start jogging. That first jog lasted about 30 SECONDS! I then recovered by walking again for a few minutes and then jogged again for 30 seconds or so. This continued until I finished my 20 minutes of walking. The following day I did the same thing and so on. The following week I PUSHED myself to run 45 seconds - 1 minute and so it went from week to week until I was able to run ONE MILE without stopping. Mind you, I did not run fast AT ALL and the pains and soreness were not pleasant, but the more I ran the better it got. The day I was able to run 3 miles without stopping, I registered for a 5K race. The rest is history. I continued pushing myself farther and faster until I was able to run a 10K and then another and another and ANOTHER! Not being satisfied with that, I pushed myself yet again until I was able to run enough to complete a HALF MARATHON (13.1 MILES). Having completed my EIGHTH half marathon just a few weeks ago, I am now in full training mode for my very first FULL MARATHON (26.2 MILES). In a nutshell, the key is to take One Step at a Time CONSISTENTLY and always push yourself a LITTLE bit more each time. (Did I mention Im 45 years old? ;-) )
