For anyone who hasnt read this:A Regeneration Theory by chrissssmith (reddit) This is probably not new new, but I thought I would share some thinking following seeing a new doctor in Deep Breath... Question: How important is the Doctors state of mind at regeneration on his next incarnation? Answer: Very. Situation: When the Ninth Doctor regenerates he has just sacrificed himself to save Rose. This Doctor, haunted by the Time War and alone, finally realises he has found someone who he cares for. [To Rose] I just want to tell you you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic Result: Nine morphs into Ten; a doctor who is younger, cooler and full of excitement and wonder, just like Rose. The Doctor has become a Doctor that will appeal to Rose in every way, because thats what was in his heart at the point of regeneration Situation: When Ten regenerates, he does a farewell tour past all those who touched his life, fighting and holding on to his existence as Ten for as long as he possibly can... I dont want to go... Result: Ten becomes Eleven - a doctor who in many ways is very similar to his previous self, because in his heart, he didnt want to change. A knock on effect of the farewell tour and the pain that brought however is that Eleven is much more at peace at being/travelling alone than Ten - he often travels alone, leaving Amy and Rory behind, and stays put on Christmas until the very end, whilst when Ten was alone, he started to lose control, such as in the Waters of Mars episode. Situation: Eleven becomes Twelve in the TARDIS after being stuck defending the people of Christmas for thousands of years, with minimum company. His last words are I will always remember when the Doctor was me, but those arent so important. Its the last words he HEARS from Amy Pond that are important - Raggedy Man...goodnight. Result: After hearing from Scottish Amy, Eleven immediately becomes Twelve, who speaks with a Scottish accent. Also, having been stuck on Christmas for so long, and essentially dying of old age, in his heart he feels truly old, and so becomes a much older man.
