Sanusi Lamido is an Islamic Scholar, Banker and a Northern Prince. He noted that Banking in Nigeria was firmly under the control of Southerners. During the bank consolidation and recapitalization drive, majority of the banks that met the capital requirement were the southern owned banks as the Northern Bankers could not compete and were further left behind. When the opportunity came and Umur Yaradue a fellow Muslim became President of Nigeria, Sanusi L. Sanusi was promoted way above his grade to the amazement of those who knew the qualification of such an important job. Never mind, this is Nigeria and he came with an agenda to equalize the lopsidedness of the Nigeria banking by fiat, hook or crook. Sanusi jaundiced eye was the reconfiguration of bank ownership to favor the Northerners by any means necessary, so he set about destroying and witch-hunting Southern Bankers. He believed that the ownership and management of banks was too concentrated in the South and so that must be changed. That was his main agenda when he took over as Governor of Central Bank.
