Sarah, a teacher from Scotia-Glenville, came to the Elkins site to do some archaeology and had a wonderful experience. The dig, led by professional archaeologist Matt Kirk of Hartgen Archaeology Associates, explored the Elkins property cistern from the 19th century home. The home is no longer on the site and the cistern was buried beneath a couple of inches of soil. It was partially unearthed during the summer Archaeology program and we used the opportunity of International Archaeology Day to explore it further. Thomas Elkins was an African American apothecary and dentist who was active in Albany in the mid-19th century and who was a member of the Vigilance Committee of the Underground Railroad.
