Sardines: I used to love sardines on a cracker when I was a boy. My Grandmother on my Moms side introduced me to them, and I really thought they were so neat. I remember that I liked the sardines packed in either oil or water, but didnt care for the ones canned in tomato sauce. Sardines were a special snack that I could only enjoy at my Grandmothers house, since my stepfather wouldnt let me eat them at home because he didnt like the smell. This from someone that asked for my Mom to cook Sauerkraut on a regular basis, which I swore the fragrance could be found on the air currents blocks from my house as I walked home from school. I remember almost making myself sick trying to hold my breath as I entered the house. To this day, I cannot stand the smell of cooked cabbage, let alone Sauerkraut. Ironically, years later when I was out on my own and suddenly thought about trying sardines on a cracker, I found the tin packed with oil tasted horrible. Deciding that I must have misremembered which type I liked, I went back to the store and bought the sardines packed in water - but, it was obvious, my taste buds had changed over time, and I couldnt stand them anymore at all!
