Sata among the failed and worst performing presidents in Africa – new index President Michael Sata is one of the African Leaders who performed below standard in 2012 and therefore completely failed the year’s good leadership test. According to the 2012 African Leadership Index compiled by Kenya-based Nation Media Group (NMG) and released this month June 2013, President Sata scored a grade of ‘D’ in the index, the second worst category but grouped together as failure with grade ‘C’. Only two presidents, Seretse Khama Ian Khama of Botswana and Mauritius prime minister, Dr Navin Ramgoolam got full marks and were awarded ‘A’. Leaders’ grades were derived from how they placed in five respected international indices of governance, plus the Nation Media Group (NMG) Political Index. The indices were weighted as Mo Ibrahim Index – 10%; Democracy Index – 10%; Press Freedom Index – 10%; Corruption Index – 15%; Human Development Index – 20%; and NMG Political Index – 35%. The NMG said the African leaders were assigned letter grades based on their 0-100 score, derived from the six indices. The best of the group received “A”, good performers got “B”, passable leaders got “C.” Leaders who performed below standard received “D” and “F.” Also, two special categories were added to these basic grades: the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Morgue. Leaders in this range represent the bottom of the barrel. Of the new comers on the continent, only John Mahama of Ghana got grade ‘B’ which means he is one of the “good performers” in African leadership, Sata is in the same group of failure with the likes of Boni Yaya of Benin, Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria, But at least Sata is not in the two extremely poor categories of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Morgue (Mortuary). In the ICU are characters like Idriss Deby of Chad, King Mswati of Swaziland, Gambia President Yahya Jammeh and Burundi’s Pierre Nkurunziza etc… In the mortuary are the usual suspects people, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Sudanese president Omer Hassan, Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki and Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial-Guinean, Joseph Kabila of Congo DR. New leaders such as Joyce Banda are in the failed category together with Sata but new Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn is already in the ICU.
