Saturday 10th January was a hectic day from start to finish for the team at Lodge Hill, and everyone was up bright and early to welcome Nick Luck and the team from Channel 4 Racing’s The Morning Line who were broadcasting live from Lodge Hill. Unfortunately the forecast wet and windy weather materialised like clockwork and proceeded to buffet the Channel 4 team during recording, which certainly tested their senses of humour! However the show went on, and like true professionals interviews were recorded out on the gallop in the wild wind and driving rain which only served to highlight the less glamourous side of National Hunt racing to viewers! Once the show was off-air it was time to head to Warwick for three runners on their prestigious Classic Chase card. Shady Lane kicked us off in the opening handicap hurdle, and followed up her win at Fakenham with a good performance when third behind Vesuvhill for owner-breeder Sue Welch. Our next runner came in the Grade 2 Leamington Novices’ Hurdle, where Three Musketeers was bidding to go on from his debut win at Wetherby in December. Despite the presence of the Warren Greatrex-trained favourite Shantou Bob, Three Musketeers travelled and jumped superbly throughout the race, and although showing signs of inexperience in the closing stages, went on to win by a half-length from Ben Case’s Ballagh. On only his third career start, Three Musketeers bagged the first success at Grade 2 level for the team, and looks set to have an exciting future ahead of him for owners the Widdowsons and Kelvin-Hughes’. On behalf of Dan and the team, thank you all for your good wishes after the success of Three Musketeers!
