Saturday 15th June 2013 Cairney Villa Utd v Olympus Hades and Odin’s wife’s had been seen together in previous weeks, heads together whispering, sources tell us this was regarding a shopping trip to that well known shopping paradise that is Primark which is only marginally dearer than shoplifting. Discussions were allegedly surrounding the purchase of handbags and leg warmers although Hades wife was heard stating she was waiting for the “sales” A few days later Hades and Odin nervously approached the reporter enquiring as to whether he could lead the team on Saturday 15th June as they both had “other commitments” The day in question started with the reporter appearing like a cross between Tom Cruise and Timothy Spall and his beautiful assistant Gerry Crielly like Hen Broon himself!! The warm up went well with the passing zipping about and the boys full of energy. The pre-match team talk was stuff of legend, poetry in motion, a scene from Brave but unfortunately with no ginger kids. The game kicked of with Olympus taking centre. The team starting was Smiler in goal, Finlay Right back, Declan left back, Josh left midfield, Owen centre midfield, Lee right midfield and Aidan centre forward. Cairney Villa Utd went straight for the tackles, the ball was won and the passing game started. The ball was played back to Deco who zipped it along the back to Finlay, he zipped it to Lee who took it a run down the wing and took a shot that went just wide. (He’ll be working the next few weeks on passing) The kick in re-started the game with the ball finding Owen who fancied his chances and hit a shot that was like a pass back straight to the keeper. (He’ll be working on shooting the next few weeks) The game flowed only in the one direction, the ball only ever penetrating the halfway line if it was played back to the defenders to re-start an attack and create space to play into. Josh in search of his first goal and fiver was up and down the left wing like a steam train. All players were getting stuck in, they never gave the opposition a second on the ball. They harassed, harangued, and using their strength and speed from the extra training session never lost out on a tackle or was beaten for speed. Josh played the ball to Aiden who fed it back to Lee, he took it a run down the wing with the ball finding Owen, he cracked a shot across goal which struck the post and rolled out to Josh. With a fiver flashing through his mind Josh hit a rocket shot which flashed back across goal and rattled the other post before being played out to safety. The shots came thick and fast, the speed of play was phenomenal, the tackles were relentless. Owen, taking the mantle from The Spaniel was all over the park much to the chargrin of the coaches, shouting was ferocious as his selective hearing was switched on. Finlay played the ball to Owen who fed through to Aidan who was tackled by the defender and the ball broke free. The 50/50 was on!! The challenge was accepted by both players, no quarter was asked nor given. Owen and the defender went for the ball with full commitment, the tackle made spectators wince as both players clattered into each other, they went down with Owen hitting his head off the ground. Luckily it was his head that he hurt and he was able to “run it off” and was soon back to himself. Darren, Lewis and Liam came on with Lewis making headway down the wings and Darren similarly on the opposite wing. Shots were taken and either went wide or were saved. Half time came and the boys were coached and educated on what was required in the second half. Cairney Villa Utd started the game with the play much the same, total domination by Utd with Smiler having a game of Solitaire in the goal mouth with an old abandoned deck of cards. Lee was working his heart out being supported by Finlay who was now playing more of a winger role than defender. Deco was covering the back almost single handedly. Josh was up and down the wing in search of his fiver, sorry, meant goal!! Lee took the ball down the wing again and must have mishit it as he made a cross, Owen running from deep met the ball which flew into the net and his high pitched voice in celebration could be heard from Valleyfield. The game restarted with Utd going for the jugular, the passing was fluid and rapid, the fighting was strong, the running was quick and the shots were slightly less so. Deco was playing Josh up and down the wing with the shots deflecting out for a corner. The corner came in and fell to Darren who lashed it into the net giving a 2-0 lead. The play re-started with the game still all flowing in the one direction. The shots flowing and the passing of a quality reminiscent of the recent Alloa v Dunfermline game. The game finished at 2-0 Man of the match = Finlay Effort of the match = Josh Goals Owen Clark Darren Clark
