Saturday, July 26 55th Annual Feria de las Flores Scholarship Pageant Join the League for United Latin American Citizens Council #1 for this year’s Feria de las Flores pageant as local young women compete for scholarships. A tradition since 1959 to assist area students with their pursuit of higher education, the pageant puts contestants through a six-month training program focused on leadership, communication skills and cultural awareness. During the main event, each contestant represents a Mexican state, wears a colorful dress that symbolizes that region and dances a routine, along with other onstage activities, while vying for the top scholarship prize and title of Feria de las Flores Queen. Contestants receive scholarship funds if they attend Del Mar College or either area Texas A&M Universities in Corpus Christi and Kingsville. Free and open to the public, this event has been sponsored by LULAC Council #1 every year as a gift to the community for their support. Anyone who can’t attend the pageant can watch contestants’ performances on Time Warner Cable and Grande Cable Channel 19.
