Saturday night reaffirmed my belief that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is one of the greatest rock & roll bands still touring! After an incredible hourlong set by opener Steve Winwood (as much as I loved this, now I REALLY need to see him in a headliner capacity, as he barely had time to play his Traffic/Blind Faith/Spencer Davis hits, as well as a cover, and one solo hit! But I digress...), Petty and the band that hes been playing with since the 70s (with very few changes, over the years!) delivered a 90-minute show with stunning perfection! He still sounds great, well into his 60s, and the band is just amazing in their ability to recreate the hits (and a few choice deep cuts - one of my pet peeves of previous tours, was that it was almost a replication of his 1993 Greatest Hits album, every time! Id still prefer dropping a few more of the over-played hits, for some more rarities, but I have to recognize the need to please the crowd with the familiar), yet still manage to make the show fresh, and rearrange the music, a bit! They always pull out a cover or two of their favorites to play, and The Byrds So You Wanna be a Rock n Roll Star the show-opener got the show going! But one of the highlights was a cover of Little Feats Willin, which just floored me! Someone got a decent shot of it, and quickly uploaded it to YouTube, so here ya go:
