Saturday, the biggest Rugby World Cup Qualifiers game yet for #KenyaXVs - vs Namibia. Biggest because it is our best preparation ever and possibly, our best squad ever. No, I dont intend to engage the In Our Days crew about which and which player is better than who. I mean that this is probably our best balanced #KenyaXVs squad to take the pitch, all factors considered. Certainly, there are guys whod easily vie for best ever too. Lavin Asego is as cheeky a fly half as any. He combines Dave Evans organizational ability with Sammy Khakames hand-eye coordination. He runs better than Dave and defends the 10 channel better than Sammy. He reads the game as well as John Ohaga. I didnt watch Jackson Omaido much but Lav has outstayed him. Where he doesnt beat them, Ill say after the RWCQs :-) I struggle to see a better #11 than Collins Injera. His game is so well rounded and his confidence supreme. The big contestant would be probably Kenyas best ever player Edward Rombo when he switched to the left wing. But, Romb-i was a specialist 14 and simply didnt have the defensive abilities and total work rate of Injera, at the blindside. Also, because he has played in a bigger, better exposed game, Collo now has a bigger fanbase :-) There is no question, though, that on Saturday, it will be ALL about the forwards. When Mwangi Muthee, current KRU chairman, played Namibia in the 1993 RWCQ, the preponderant Kenya props, the Kangethe twins, were probably in diapers. Also, the score was 60-9, Namibia. The score will not be the same Saturday because our forwards have come furthest in the game since. They will not be better than Namibias but they will do enough to unleash our potent Back Force. So, I will be rooting for the Simbas Saturday and I know that in the wee hours of Sunday, we will still be pouring over the tiny details of the match with the selfsame Rugby Addicts (they prefer ardent Rugby Consumers but challenging that is the beginning of another long conversation)... Meanwhile, I have a proud rugby pedigree but one of the things I am most proud of is that I coached this #KenyaXVs captain... GO for it Kenya!
