"Saved by His Mighty Arm" Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like his? (Job 40:9). Scripture: Job 40:6-14 Song: “Sheltered in the Arms of God” What started out as a playful outing to watch a sea turtle turned into a brutal buffeting of waves. My husband and I swam around a jutting point of rock, hoping to enter the calmer Hawaiian bay on the other side of it. I fought not only the great Pacific Ocean, but the rising panic within. Father, help me not be so afraid. Calm came over me. Then I was submerged, somersaulting, and pulled out to sea. Miraculously, I didn’t fight. Completely relaxed, I was an underwater rag doll. Suddenly I felt myself rising. As my head broke the surface I gasped for air and looked into the white face of my husband. He’d watched me being taken from him and, in a valiant effort, anchored himself by wrapping one strong arm around a coral reef while reaching for me with the other. He grabbed my swimsuit and, leveraging himself on the coral, pulled with all his might. His arm was a bloody mess . . . but I lived. Jerry’s strong arm (strengthened by God’s) saved me. Though a good swimmer, I had been totally incapable of helping myself. If I’d tried, I would have fought against the arm reaching for me. Trapped in the undertow, I would have perished. Mighty God, sometimes I think too much of myself, flexing puny muscles in Your face. Fighting too-big battles, I strive on my own, rejecting Your sovereign will. Forgive me. You are the only one adorned in glory. Praise to You, through Jesus. Amen."
