Saw 20,000 Days on Earth this evening. A stylish and fictionalised account of a day in the life of rock performer Nick Cave. The film sees Nick at home writing and taking part in family activities with his wife and children. But then we travel with him around Brighton whilst he chats with the likes of Ray Winston and Kyle Minogue. We are also like voyeurs as we witness a session with a psychoanalyst. And finally we are part of the audience as we see him perform his music in various venues, including the Sydney Opera House. The film is engaging in parts but not in others, but you are struck by how this driven artist sees life and needs to be creative to remain sane. The film reminded me of Mick Jagger in Performance and David Bowies The Man Who Fell to Earth. When hes on stage he has the magnetism of Jagger and also Jim Morrison from The Doors. Fans of Nick Cave will be enthralled by this documentary, but Im not sure the film will have the same appeal to those who are not familiar with his work. Good soundtrack though and it was great to see Brighton again.
