Saw MATILDA last night and just wondering if anyone else had the same take - 1. Brilliant DESIGN elements even from the LAST ROW IN THE BALCONY! [nosed bleed!] Lights and Sets ingeniously coordinate to create different worlds and bleed from scene to scene seamlessly. **** 2.As a choreographer/director whose shows are based in their physical landscape - I was blown away by the PHYSICAL MOVEMENT of the piece. HIGH ENERGY and crisp staccato moves that served the music better than the words. **** 3.. Beautiful ENSEMBLE of ACTORS, many of whom play multiple roles and swings. The young actors are fab even though I didnt understand half of what they said - and not entirely their fault - because of the FAUX BRIT accent that is assimilated by all - I would have rather a full on REAL accent than this opera-speak. *** 3. And though I appreciate that it is DARK. staying very true to Roald Dahls dark take on childhood, the story is wonderfully evocative and nasty - but it is a MUSICAL COMEDY and, Im sorry, but I need a SONG every now and then and not just recitation to music. The only hummable tune comes at the shows end and even it is a shout-fest. * All in all I LIKED it. I would recommend it - but it could have stood on its own as a PLAY with incidental music and I would have been just as happy. Total *** And Wednesday we see a show that did all the same [DARK, NASTY, ABOUT FINDING LOVE WITHIN THE HARSHNESS OF LIFE] and more and ......... IT has TUNES galore - SIDE SHOW.
