Saw Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood at 9:30 Club last night. It was a fantastic show. Almost as fantastic as the music, though, was watching the interplay between the four musicians: how they locked into each other, kept checking in, watched for signals and musical keys and jumped in to support whatever their partners put out. The smile of surprise at discovering what new thing one of them had just done and where it took them, the deference and respect for each others musical ideas. It was awesome.
