Saw The Equalizer recently, enjoyed it quite a bit. Theres nothing in it that is particularly unique, but it manages to use all of the standard action tropes as tropes and not boring cliches. Peregrine and I called a lot of the surprises and twists, but they were still well done and enjoyable. Basically if you like action movies this movie probably has everything that you enjoy about them. It did get me thinking about why we (just people in general) really seem to go for the underdog story. I think it answers the fantasy that we can rise up and take on anything that makes the world unfair. Many people see themselves as being on the short end of something, whether they are or not, so the underdog character is easy to relate to. Washington has made an art out of playing characters who are ultimate badasses and yet the best, most likable regular people; a blend many writers and actors either fail to perfect or never bother creating (the 90s are calling, they would like their anti-heroes back). I would definately see a movie featuring Denzel Washington with superpowers, although a lot of this filmography is pretty much playing a superhero sans powers anyway. I nominate him if they ever get around to making a Black Panther movie, which is also something that really needs to exist.
