Sawnee Mountain Preserve near Cumming, Georgia is one of the best - TopicsExpress

Sawnee Mountain Preserve near Cumming, Georgia is one of the best views in metro-Atlanta. Stone Mountain and Kennesaw Mountain are also impressive, but not as convenient for those that live up the GA 400 and I-985/I-85 corridors. The area around Sawnee has a gold mining history after it was discovered nearby in Auraria in 1829. The surrounding land was once the domain of the Creek and Cherokee Indians. It is believed that Native Americans may have used a natural clearing atop the mountain called the Indian Seats for ceremonial purposes. Mountain tops are sacred to Native Americans because they believe, rightfully so, that on the peaks they are closer to heaven. As white settlers migrated to the area a local Cherokee named Sawnee helped them adjust to the natives former land, and the area is named in his honor. Round trip, the hiking trail to get the the top is about 4 miles.
